Sustainability Facilitation Consulting Services

Helping clients achieve their maximum ecological, social and economic potential.

One Planet Community's non-profit consulting team of sustainability facilitation and green building experts works with forward-thinking real estate developers, municipalities, and organizations to create Sustainability Action Plans - practical roadmaps to achieving "true sustainability" in infrastructure development and sustainable living. Some of these reports are available as published research.

Background
One Planet Communities in North America is delivered by BioRegional North America, a registered non-profit and sister organization of BioRegional in London, UK. BioRegional has over a decade of experience as sustainability facilitators, leaders in the implementation of ground-breaking and award-winning work in eco-housing, fibres, sustainable forestry, sustainable farming, paper and recycling. The BedZED eco-neighborhood in London(completed 2002) is BioRegional's most recognized achievement.

The BioRegional North American consulting team draw upon and contribute to the international expertise of BioRegional's consulting practice within the One Planet Communities program. Our consulting practice is based on lessons learned and best practices from our pioneering work building leading green developments such as BedZED and developing comprehensive sustainability strategies for enterprises around the world.

Consulting Services
Our consultants have a broad range of hands-on expertise, including: green building materials (in particular interior fit-up and LEED compliance); carbon and ecological footprinting; community engagement, integrated design, facilitation, asset-mapping and social marketing skills; facilitation of integrated design teams; green marketing and retail web strategies; sustainable business, knowledge management and change management; environmental law and policy reform; and zero (fossil) energy developments.
We have worked on many of the leading green developments in North America and are deeply networked with cutting-edge developments and sustainability initiatives world-wide.

Sustainability Action Planning
The One Planet Communities Consulting team uses a holistic Sustainability Action Plan process to help its partners achieve advanced sustainability goals and market leadership. Using the Ten Principles of One Planet Communities, ecological footprinting, and bioregionalism as a holistic guide to develop concrete plans for raising the quality of life and sustainability of new and existing communities, regions, and businesses. Pictured left: BioRegional North America lead a Sustainability Action Planning process charrette at Sonoma Mountain Village in California.

One Planet Lifestyles
In combination with our strong green building knowledge base, we also offer unparalleled expertise in developing and implementing sustainable lifestyles strategies for communities and businesses. The relative importance of lifestyle choices compared to the impact of our buildings and infrastructure is extremely high. For example, our food consumption alone accounts for around a quarter of our total ecological footprint. The One Planet Lifestyles Process compliments a Sustainability Action Plan with a suite of cost-effective methods to A) increase quality of life, health, happiness and interaction among residents or employees and B) to gently persuade residents or employees to lower their ecological impacts to a One Planet level, and provide the infrastructure and social programs that make sustainable behaviours easy, affordable, and practical.

Portfolio of projects we've worked on

London 2012 Olympics

BioRegional was commissioned by the London 2012 Olympics committee to create a "One Planet" Olympic plan covering low-carbon energy & transport strategies, biodiversity and a legacy for a sustainable community. On-going plans call for Zero Waste from 12 million meals and reducing carbon emissions by 50%.

Footprint Reductions on TV

BioRegional provided the new Discovery Planet Green channel with footprint reduction science and tactics in filming reality TV series "WA$TED". Currently playing on TLC, the show provides "sustainability makeovers" to ordinary families. BioRegional went on-site to provide baseline household ecological footprint audits and then generated Household Sustainability Action Plans that emphasized those lifestyle/behavioural changes and home retrofit actions that would produce the "biggest bang for the buck" footprint reductions. Participating families implementing BioRegional's advice have achieved a 30% average reduction in ecological footprint, and created some compelling TV.

Rohnert Park, CALIFORNIA

Codding Enterprise's $1billion Sonoma Mountain Village project is centered on a town square that adaptively reuses 700,000 square feet of buildings clustered around a new daily farmer's market. The 1900-unit project is already solar-powered by a 1.14MW solar array, and is committed to an 83% reduction in total direct carbon emissions..

"'The most interesting aspect of this project could be the social engineering... creating a sense of community and a consensus for living within a smaller ecological footprint.."

Abu Dhabi, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

Masdar City - a 2.3-square mile city for 1,500 businesses and 50,000 residents - will be the world's first zero-carbon, zero-waste, car-free city. The $15 billion project will exceed the Ten One Planet Principles by the time it is completed in 2015 (5 years ahead of the 2020 targets). Masdar's stone-and-mud walls, built in the tradition of an Arab walled village, will be covered in photovoltaic panels capable of generating 130 megawatts.

"Get ready for the world's first carbon-free city - smack-dab in the center of the oil-rich Middle East."
- CNN

Sesimbra Coast, PORTUGAL

The 1.1 billion Mata de Sesimbra project south of Lisbon, with 8,000 solar-powered eco-homes, hotels, and shops, is surrounded by 12,000 acres of restored forest and wetlands - Europe's largest private reforestation project. 50% of food will be sourced within a 31-mile radius. It has been declared a "Project of National Importance" by Portugal's Prime Minister.

"An ambitious experiment in sustainable living, with zero emissions and almost zero waste."
- BBC

Brighton, UK

The 1st official One Planet Community to finish construction, One Brighton is a zero-parking development with renewable energy generated onsite from roof-top wind turbines and a waste biomass Combined Heat and Power Plant, and a "green lifestyles concierge" for residents.

"Brighton is Britain's eco-capital… now the place is about to get its first zero-carbon development.
" - The Times

East London, UK

In February 2007 the One Gallions consortium beat 17 other competitors to be selected as the preferred development partner for the Mayor of London's first zero carbon development at Gallions Park in East London.

"A landmark scheme that helps set the standard for environmentally sustainable development across London."
- Mayor of London Ken Livingstone

South London, UK

One Planet Communities are informed by lessons learned at the multi-award winning BedZED - the UK's largest urban eco-village (completed 2002), with 96 homes, commercial, and community space. The average resident uses 23 gallons less water and 58% less electricity per day, saving 5.1 tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year through a wide range of sustainable technologies and green lifestyle strategies.

"BedZED's environmental achievements suggest that neighborhood-scale sustainable development can go much further than has been imagined in the USA." - Urban Land

Thames Gateway, UK

BioRegional is working on "Z-Squared", a proposed 2,000 home zero carbon zero waste mixed-use community.

ONE PLANET LIVING IN THE SUBURBS

This report examines the challenges and opportunities of creating a more sustainable society and identifies some of the real hurdles facing the UK government in its commitment to cut carbon emissions by 60 per cent by 2030. This case study focuses on Solihull in the UK, but the lessons learned, and the suggested targets for ecological footprint reduction for other suburbs, are very relevant to One Planet DC.
