Sonoma Mountain Village: Sustainability Action Plan Report

Developer Codding Enterprises and BioRegional have published a Sustainability Action Plan Report for Sonoma Mountain Village - America's first official One Planet Community. The report includes a "mini-plan" for each of the Ten One Planet Principles, and details how the suburban neighborhood of almost 1900 homes plans to slash total direct emissions by 83% (down to just 2.6 tons CO2 per year per household). The One Planet Community will meet the targets laid out in California's stringent AB32 emissions reduction law 5 years early, and by 2020 will radically exceed the targets (AB32 requires a 25% GHG reduction state-wide).

Z-Squared Reports

A template for the flagship One Planet Community to be built in the Thames Gateway just east of London in the UK, the Z-squared Concept Community envisions homes and employment for up to 5,000 people, with retail, leisure, health and education facilities nearby.

Using information on resource use and waste generation and learning from BedZED, BioRegional led a design team to develop the initial concept design and generate several reports of value to other One Planet Communities around the world. Working with KBR infrastructure engineers and Fulcrum Consulting we have mapped the flows of resources through the community; heat, coolth, power, water, wastewater, waste – and we have evaluated technology options that could deliver zero carbon and zero waste. The options were costed by Cyril Sweet cost consultants and compared to a base case development. Architects, Foster & Partners undertook preliminary massing studies.

One Planet Cities

One Planet living in the Suburbs

This report examines the challenges and opportunities of creating a more sustainable society and identifies some of the real hurdles facing the UK government in its commitment to cut carbon emissions by 60 per cent by 2030. This case study focuses on Solihull in the UK, but the lessons learned, and the suggested targets for ecological footprint reduction for other suburbs, are very relevant to One Planet DC.

Vancouver EcoDensity Brief: Reducing Ecological Footprint through high-quality densification

Mayor Sam Sullivan invited One Planet Communities to speak at the launch of his laudable new Vancouver EcoDensity Initiative as a kick-off to the Third World Urban Forum. The BBC - on hand for the World Urban Forum - ended up quoting one of our remarks. We wrote a short paper on ecological footprint impacts of densification, using the framework of the ten principles of One Planet Communities. Official quote: "EcoDensity promises to be one of the most important strategies to reducing the ecological footprint of Vancouver residents, and it will enhance their quality of life, too."
